'More and more demanding,' Iga Swiatek throws shade on tennis scheduling, resulting in increasing injuries for players
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

2024 has been a year of injuries, as most of the top ATP and WTA stars are being forced to the sidelines. Recently, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev have all pulled out of the Madrid Open due to injury concerns.

Speaking about the increase in the number of injuries, Iga Swiatek believes that the sport has become more challenging, testing the players physically. She also took a dig at the ATP and WTA organizations for their poor scheduling, which has become more demanding now.

I think overall the tour is getting more and more demanding because of the length of the tournaments and all these mandatory rules, both on ATP and WTA. We'll see what it's going to bring in the future. For sure scheduling-wise, the planning is going to be more important, sometimes even passing some tournaments that are important for you, for you to be ready for next one. said Iga Swiatek via Rome Press.

Heading into the last Masters event on tour, Swiatek does not expect herself to be fresh and is likely to be using the rest days in Rome to rest and not practice. A couple of days ago, Swiatek had beaten Aryna Sabalenka in a grueling final to win the Madrid Open title.

Swiatek had beaten the WTA No.2 in the closest of matches. She beat the Belarusian 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7) to lift her maiden Madrid Open title. However, the Pole revealed that she had to immediately pack for Italy. With another Masters event starting in a couple of days, Swiatek made it to Rome, hoping to stay fresh.

Iga Swiatek was forced to compromise her practice sessions due to the hectic scheduling of tournaments

Two-time Italian Open winner Iga Swiatek enters another edition of tennis in Rome as she looks to back her maiden Madrid title with another title. However, the Pole is struggling to find rest amidst the hectic scheduling of events.

In a recent interview, Swiatek revealed that she had to take her practice sessions in a less intense way to give her body more rest time. Despite not being in great physical form, Swiatek remains the favorite for the tournament.

I would say I’m giving myself time to play tennis more relaxed way, not think about playing matches or points because we don’t have time to rest properly. Iga Swiatek added

The WTA no.1 will lead the first half of the draw. She is paired alongside some hot names in the sport like Marta Kostyuk and Coco Gauff. After a successful Madrid Open, the fans would hope to see Swiatek win her third title in Rome.
