Red Sox Officially Option Interesting Prospect To Minor Leagues To Make Room For Star Hurler
Allan Jung/Telegram & Gazette / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Boston Red Sox have one of their stars back.

Boston finally is starting to get healthier and will have star left-handed starting pitcher Chris Sale back on the mound Friday night against the Detroit Tigers. To make room on the roster for Sale, the Red Sox optioned intriguing young hurler Brandon Walter down to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, according to the club.

Walter is Boston's 24th-ranked prospect and made his Major League Baseball debut earlier this season with the Red Sox. The 26-year-old was selected in the 26th round of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft and has worked his way up the club's farm system. Walter was added to Boston's 40-man roster in 2022 and made his big league debut on June 22nd against the Minnesota Twins.

So far this season, Walter has made six appearances out of the Boston bullpen and has compiled a 3.07 ERA. The 26-year-old has compiled a 9-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 14 2/3 innings pitched while allowing five earned runs.

Walter very well could find his way back to the big leagues again at some point this season. The 26-year-old still is on the Red Sox's 40-man roster and could move the active roster at some point if the Red Sox are looking for more bullpen depth.

Sale is set to make his first start since June 1st after suffering a fractured shoulder blade. The seven-time All-Star could give the Red Sox a major lift as the club looks to nab a postseason spot. The Red Sox currently are four games out of a Wild Card spot and the return of Sale could be just what the club needs to get over the hump with under 50 games remaining in the regular season.
